Ezekiel 38–39 · Revelation 20

Gog is a war that already has a name.

After the thousand years Satan is loosed to deceive the nations, Gog and Magog, to gather them to the war. They surround the camp of the saints. Fire comes down. Ezekiel had already said the corpses would feed the birds and be buried east of the Dead Sea. Cassius Dio says the dead were past finding out. Justin says Bar Kokhba killed Christians who would not deny Jesus. Full preterism will not read this chapter. Partial preterism will not date it.

Three witnesses, one war

Ezekiel names the banquet. Justin names the camp. Dio names the dead. Read them as one file, not as three hobbies.

Prophecy
Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy hordes… I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured… I will give unto Gog a place for burial in Israel, the valley of them that pass through on the east of the sea.

Ezekiel 39:4, 11

The camp
During the recent Jewish war, Bar Cochba, the leader of the revolt of the Jews, had the order issued against Christians that, if they did not deny and defame Jesus Christ, they would be led away to suffer the most severe punishments.

Justin Martyr, First Apology 31.6

The dead
Fifty of their most important outposts and nine hundred and eighty-five of their most famous villages were razed to the ground. Five hundred and eighty thousand men were slain in the various raids and battles, and the number of those that perished by famine, disease and fire was past finding out.

Cassius Dio, Roman History 69.14

01 · Ezekiel 38

Not a future northern chart

Gog of the land of Magog, prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, comes up against the mountains of Israel in the latter years. Futurism hears 'Rosh' and writes Russia. It then waits for a coalition that never quite arrives, while a documented messianic war sits in the file for eighteen centuries.

Ezekiel's horizon is Israel's last gathering in the land, after a period of quiet, against a people dwelling securely. That is not the Cold War. It is Judea after the First Revolt: Temple gone, nation under captivity, Satan bound from the old deception, then loosed for one more try at restoring the kingdom by the sword. The latter years are the latter years of that commonwealth, not of planet Earth.

Ezekiel 38:8, 16
After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword… And thou shalt come up against my people Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall come to pass in the latter days.

02 · Sequence

After the thousand years — not instead of them

Revelation 20 will not let Gog be AD 70 retold. The dragon is bound that he should deceive the nations no more until the thousand years are finished. Then he must be loosed a little while. Then Gog. Then fire. Then the white throne. Full preterism has to make 'after' mean 'during,' and 'a thousand years' mean 'the summer of 70.' That is not sequence. That is collage.

Atavist theology lets the purpose clause stand. The binding is the captivity of Judea after the First Revolt: the old organized deception interrupted, the church expanding, Hebrew national life not abolished but paused from gathering the nations to a messianic war. The little while is 132–136. Rabbi Akiva, who had lived through the first war, blesses the second. The binding did not fail. It ended on schedule.

Revelation 20:7–9
And when the thousand years are finished, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall come forth to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war… And they went up over the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down out of heaven, and devoured them.

03 · Revelation 10

The thunders were sealed for a reason

Between the sixth and seventh trumpets, seven thunders speak. John prepares to write. A voice from heaven says: seal them up; do not write. The nested sequence of seals, trumpets, and bowls then runs out against Jerusalem in the 60s–70s. The thunders never appear in that sequence. They are postponed on purpose.

Full preterism has nowhere to put a sealed remainder. Atavist theology does: fire from God out of heaven in Revelation 20:9, the Bar Kokhba catastrophe, sixty years after the bowls. Revelation 10 is the book's own proof that it is sequential, not a collage, and that 70 is not the last thunder.

Revelation 10:4
And when the seven thunders uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying, Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

04 · AD 132

Simon bar Kokhba, son of the star

Akiva applies Numbers 24:17 — a star out of Jacob — to Simon ben Kosiba, and the name becomes Bar Kokhba, son of the star. An independent Jewish state lasts more than three years. Coins are struck. Years are numbered 'of the redemption of Israel.' This is not a riot. It is a restored kingdom claimed in the land after the kingdom has already been given to a nation bringing forth its fruits.

Jesus had warned of false christs. The first war was thick with them. The last war has a name and a rabbi. Abraham's physical seed, deceived into one more attempt to take the mountain by flesh. The stone has already struck. Gog is the chaff refusing the wind.

Numbers 24:17
I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not nigh: There shall come forth a star out of Jacob, And a sceptre shall rise out of Israel.

05 · The camp

Christians who would not deny Jesus

They compass the camp of the saints and the beloved city. Justin Martyr, writing within a generation, records the order: if they would not deny and defame Jesus Christ, they would be led away to the most severe punishments. Bar Kokhba first ignored the churches, then, as the war turned, demanded their confession. They would not call him messiah. That is the camp, named.

Partial preterism still schedules this surrounding. The letter is already in the file. A future Gog that must ignore Justin is a Gog invented to keep a chart alive.

Revelation 20:9
And they went up over the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down out of heaven, and devoured them.

06 · Ezekiel 39

The dead past finding out

Ezekiel 39 sets a banquet for the birds and the beasts, and a burial in the valley east of the sea that takes seven months. Cassius Dio, who has no interest in Ezekiel, says fifty strongholds and nine hundred and eighty-five villages were razed, 580,000 slain in the raids and battles, and those who perished by famine, disease, and fire past finding out. Fire from heaven. Chaff on the wind. Daniel 2:35 enacted as history.

Hadrian plows Jerusalem into Aelia Capitolina and bans the nation from its house. The times of the Gentiles, as a trampling of that Jerusalem, are fulfilled. Hebrew national history in the land ends. The white throne of that world sits. Then there is nothing left of the statue but mountain.

Ezekiel 39:4, 11
Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy hordes… I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured… And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place for burial in Israel, the valley of them that pass through on the east of the sea.
Daniel 2:35
Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors; and the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

07 · Three refusals

Why the other maps will not take this war

Full preterism shares the time-texts and then cannot afford a second war. Revelation 20 becomes a recap of 19. Gog becomes a mood. Dio and Justin become footnotes to 70. The film stops too early.

Partial preterism takes AD 70 seriously and then ships Gog, the white throne, and the last enemy to our future — though Betar has already fallen, though the camp of the saints has already been surrounded, though the chaff has already blown. It is like claiming a documented war has not happened yet.

Futurism must stretch 'this generation,' 'soon,' and 'at hand' until they no longer constrain the people who heard them, and then invent a Gog from a map of modern states. Atavist theology lets Ezekiel, John, Justin, and Dio speak of the same little while. Then the mountain. Then the age that does not end.
